How it came about
Level Up has only quite recently come together as an album. Since releasing Primary Jet Men in 2004 I've been pottering in the studio, as you do, with all sorts of different ideas. I didn't at anytime imagine that what I was doing was recording a follow up album; just doing my thing, making music, exploring, experimenting, searching for the lost chord(I'm sure I left it lying around here somewhere). One morning it dawned on me that I had more than enough music to make a CD, so voila. Level Up is born. These folks have been involved along the way; Gretchen Anderson, Tom Bolton, Doron Blaikie, Shane DiIorio, Jon Ritchie, Scott Symes, Bruce Pumpa, Cafe and Colin. Here's a little spontaneous blurb I wrote about Level Up,
'I set out into the music desert after my last album, not sure where to go. It was and is my greatest effort to date, sizzling psychadelic folk pop. My new album which has crystallised through pure act of will, is much less elegant, much less beautiful, in fact it's ugly by comparison, but this new one, Level Up, is no less symbolic. It's symbolic in its more callous approach to music, less precious, but no less valuable. I've cooked a nourishing healthy meal, I've eaten it in good company, now I'm left with the washing up, and then it'll be on the shelves.'
